Expect snowy weather to move from the Plains and into the Eastern US on Tuesday. A strong low pressure system that brought 3-5 inches of snow to the Midwest as well as the Southern Plains will continue tracking eastward over the Mississippi River Valley and towards the East Coast. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will continue feeding this system, while flow around it will create a cold front that will extend down the Mississippi River and up the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. Expect 2-5 inches of new snow over most of the Midwest throughout the day. The Tennessee Valley may see up to an inch of snow in the morning, turning to a messy combination of frozen rain and sleet by afternoon as temperatures reach just above freezing. Due to abundant available moisture in the Gulf states, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop over the Southeast. These storms will kick up some strong winds and have the potential of turning severe in some areas. Expect winds to gust up to 30 mph.

To the north, New England and the Northeast will see an increasing chance for snow throughout the day. Light snow ranging between 1-2 inches is anticipated by Tuesday evening.

Behind this strong system, a large ridge of high pressure will build in over the Plains. This will bring cold and windy conditions as Arctic air pours in from Canada. The Northern Plains will see highs just above zero with winds up to 20 mph, allowing for wind chills in the -20s again on Tuesday.

Out West, another Pacific storm will move onshore and produce a cold front that will track through northern California. This will kick up scattered showers with snow at higher elevations. Expect near a half of inch of rain with up to 3 inches of snow in the Sierras.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of -23 degrees at Jordan, Mont. to a high of 85 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
