... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 am Friday to 6 am MDT
Saturday...
The National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a Winter Storm
Warning for heavy snow... which is in effect from 6 am Friday to 6 am
MDT Saturday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.
* Location... the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains... along with
the Wet Mountain Valley... Fremont County and lower elevations of
Chaffee County.
* Cause and timing... latest computer simulations Thursday morning
indicate heavy snow will occur across all of upper Arkansas
River valley... and the Southern Mountain region of Colorado. The
heaviest snow will begin around sunrise across the Chaffee
County and Fremont County regions... with the snow spreading
south along the southern mountains Friday morning.
* Snow accumulation... 4 to 12 inches of snow is expected for
elevations below 9000... 8 to 18 inches is expected above 9000
feet.
* Wind... at lower elevations winds will be from the northeast at
10 to 15 mph. Much stronger northeast winds will occur over the
mountains passes where gusts could exceed 40 mph.
* Impact... significant amounts of snow will occur. Blowing snow
will occur above elevations above 9000 feet. The strongest winds
will occur at the mountain passes.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Strong winds and reduced visibility are expected due to heavy
snowfall and blowing snow.
Avoid travel in the warning area. If you are planning to travel
in the warning area during the time of the warning... listen to
the latest weather forecast and consider traveling at another
time or by another Route. If you must travel in the warning area
during the time of the warning... take along a winter survival
kit. If you become stranded in a rural area... stay with your
vehicle until help arrives. To keep warm in your vehicle... run
your engine 10 minutes each hour... and make sure the exhaust pipe
is clear of snow to avoid Carbon monoxide poisoning.
