... Flood safety awareness week...
The National Weather Service has designated March 16 to 20 as flood safety awareness week. The purpose of flood safety awareness week is to raise public awareness of the dangers of flooding... and ways to protect life and property.
Todays topic of information is... flood risk and flood insurance. A variety of flooding and related phenomena impact the nation throughout the year. Everyone is at some risk at some point... whether at home... in a vehicle... or elsewhere. Floods are 4 times more likely to occur than a fire. And about 30 percent of all insurance claims paid each year are for property located outside of high-risk areas.
You might think that your insurance will cover you for flood damages. But most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage... and only a few inches of water in your home can result in thousands in dollars of damage.
However... flood insurance is available to property owners and renters in communities participating in the federal emergency management agency /fema/ National flood insurance program /nfip/. The nfip is a federal program which enables property owners to Purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding. There is a 30-day waiting period once flood insurance is purchased before it GOES into effect... so it is important to get your policy well before floodwaters threaten.
