The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for hazardous winter weather... which is in effect from 4 PM this afternoon to 7 PM CDT Saturday.
* Timing... of the onset of the snow is around 4 PM this afternoon around Russell... Ellsworth and Great Bend around 5 PM... and Salina around 7 PM.
* Snow accumulations... will range from around 1 to 2 inches around Russell... to 3 to 4 inches from Salina to Lyons.
* Impacts... winds will be sustained at 25 to 30 mph... with gusts near 40 mph by late this afternoon and continue into the night. This will result in considerable drifting of the wet snow. Some slick spots may develop... especially during periods of heavier snow.

In 1950... Timberline Lodge... located on the south slopes of Mount Hood about 60 miles east of Portland... was buried under 20.5 feet of snow which had set a record for the State of Oregon. In 1935... deadly... suffocating dust storms wreaked havoc across southeast Colorado between March 12th and 25th. Six people died and countless livestock starved or suffocated. Some areas were buried under 6 feet of dust! In 1907... the high temperature reached 91 degrees in Wichita... the earliest 90 degree reading in the citys history.
