... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT Sunday...
A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and the potential of sleet
and freezing rain remains in effect until 7 PM CDT Sunday.
* Short term trends... moderate to occasionally heavy snow will
impact southeast Kansas far western Missouri west of a
Neosho... to El Dorado Springs to Warsaw line through early
afternoon. Additional accumulations of 1 to 3 inches will be
possible through the afternoon with the highest amounts in
southeast Kansas. Temperatures will remain near 30 degrees.
The snow may be mixed with sleet or freezing rain from Anderson
to Joplin to Hermitage. Ice accumulations of one tenth of an
inch or less are expected on elevated objects.
Snow amounts through late morning have generally ranged around
an inch with up to three inches in Bourbon County Kansas.
* Timing and areas affected... precipitation will become primarily
snow across most of the warning area this afternoon and continue
into tonight. The snow will be heavy at times.
* Snow and sleet accumulations... snow accumulations of 4 to 8
inches are expected by the time the storm ends late Sunday.
Locally higher amounts up to one foot will be possible in
southeast Kansas. The heaviest snow will fall this afternoon
into Sunday morning. Sleet accumulations are expected to be
minor. Snow may transition to a wintry mix late tonight and
Sunday which will impact accumulations.
* Ice accumulations... a thin glazing of ice up to one tenth of an
inch will be possible. Any ice accumulations will occur on elevated
surfaces... as well as on bridges and overpasses.
* Winds and visibility... northerly winds will increase to 15 to30
mph which could result in poor visibility due to blowing snow.
* Impacts... travel conditions will deteriorate today particularly
across southeast Kansas... but more significant travel impacts are
expected to develop tonight and Sunday morning. This winter
storm will impact the Highway 54... 69 and 71 corridors... as well
as portions of Interstate 44. The combination of heavy wet
snow... light icing and increasing wind may result in sporadic
power outages.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of
snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in
an emergency. If you must travel... consider taking a winter storm
kit along with you. This kit should include such items as tire
chains... booster cables... a flashlight... shovel... blankets...
extra clothing and anything else that would help you survive in
case you become stranded.
