... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT Sunday...
A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow... sleet and freezing rain remains
in effect until 7 PM CDT Sunday.
* Short term trends... moderate to occasional heavy snow will
develop across southeast Kansas this morning where temperatures
will remain in the upper 20s. Snow accumulations through noon
will range from one to three inches.
Freezing rain mixed with snow and sleet will affect west central
and far southwest Missouri along the Highway 71 corridor... and
north of Highway 54. Ice accumulations of one tenth of an inch
or less are expected this morning before changing to snow by
this afternoon.
* Timing and areas affected... freezing rain and sleet will change
to snow across most of the warning area by this afternoon. The
exception may be areas just east of Highway 71 where freezing
rain may persist into the afternoon. Snow... heavy at
times... will then continue tonight into Sunday before
diminishing late in the day. The snow may change back to rain on
Sunday.
* Snow and sleet accumulations... snow accumulations of 4 to 8
inches are expected by the time the storm ends late Sunday. The
heaviest snow will likely fall this afternoon into Sunday
morning. Sleet accumulations are expected to be minor.
* Ice accumulations... a thin glazing of ice up to one tenth of an
inch will be possible. Any ice accumulations will occur on
elevated surfaces... as well as on bridges and overpasses.
* Winds and visibility... northerly winds will increase to 15 to 30
mph which could result in poor visibility due to blowing snow.
* Impacts... travel conditions will deteriorate today particularly
across southeast Kansas... but more significant travel impacts
are expected to develop tonight and Sunday morning. This winter
storm will impact the Highway 54... 69 and 71 corridors... as well
as portions of Interstate 44. The combination of heavy wet
snow... light icing and increasing wind may result in sporadic
power outages.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Warning means severe weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will
make travel very hazardous or impossible. Consider taking a winter
storm kit along with you. This kit should include such items as
tire chains... booster cables... a flashlight... shovel... blankets... extra
clothing and anything else that would help you survive in case you
become stranded.
