Public Information Statement
Statement as of 3:20 am CDT on March 22, 2010
... Winter weather impact statement...
Valid...
Wednesday and Wednesday night.
Winter weather expected...
Snow
Affected area...
The Oklahoma Panhandle and the western and central Texas Panhandle
Forecast timing of the event...
A mixture of rain and snow will develop across the western Oklahoma Panhandle and the northwest Texas Panhandle on Wednesday. This mixture of rain and snow will switch over to all snow and spread southeast across the Oklahoma Panhandle and across potions of the Texas Panhandle which are on The Caprock. The snow will then end early Thursday morning.
Potential impacts...
1 to 4 inches of snow are possible... with the greatest amounts across the western Oklahoma Panhandle and the northwest Texas Panhandle. The snow is expected to be wet... especially early on. Therefore... blowing and drifting snow should be minimized. The snow may cause icy and snowpacked roads.
Discussion...
Another upper level storm system will move southeast into the southern rockies by Wednesday and then it is expected to move across the panhandles Wednesday night. Cold air will be in place when the storm system moves across the panhandles. Moisture will be brought into the system to help produce snow across the Oklahoma Panhandle and most of the Texas Panhandle. The storm will then move away from the area by early Thursday morning.
The models are in fairly good agreement on the track of this storm. However... they disagree on how fast to switch the rain over to snow. If this changeover happens faster than currently forecasted... the snowfall accumulations will need to be increased across the western Oklahoma Panhandle and the northwest Texas Panhandle.
