... Last day of flood safety awareness week...
The National Weather Service has designated March 15 to 19 as flood safety awareness week. The purpose of flood safety awareness week has been to raise public awareness of the dangers of flooding... and ways to protect life and property.
Todays topic of information is... flood safety and preparation. Floods happen... and you need to be prepared when they do. Each year... more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard. On average... about 100 people are killed each year nation-wide. Good preparation and knowing what to do in a flood situation will greatly increase your ability to stay safe.
Here are some good flood safety preparation tips...
* prepare and practice a family disaster plan. * Assemble a disaster supply kit. * Check your homeowners insurance policy to see if you are covered for flood and water damage. If not... consider adding coverage. * Keep all important documents and other valuables in a safety deposit box or other flood resistant storage container. * Know where you can go if ordered to evacuate your location. * Know how to get a hold of relatives and friends to let them know you are safe.
The American Red Cross and the federal emergency management agency have web sites with several examples and ideas on disaster plans and disaster kits. Other information on how to stay safe... and on flood safety awareness week is available at:

We hope you have found the information provided during this past week to be useful. If you have any other questions on flooding or flood safety... be sure to contact your National Weather Service.
