... The Flood Warning remains in effect until 700 PM EST today for
Barbour... Nicholas... Randolph... Upshur... Webster and Pocahontas
counties...
At 422 am EST National Weather Service Doppler radar showed a
wide band of moderate to heavy rain... across central and southern
West Virginia... and working its way into the northern mountains.
With rainfall rates of a half inch an hour or more
at times... one to one and one half inches of rain possible through
this evening... with locally up to two inches not out of the
question. This will cause streams and creeks to flood.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.
Vulnerable points in Nicholas County include Richwood where the
Cherry river runs through. Vulnerable spots in Webster County
include Webster Springs and points upstream... which will be
impacted by snowmelt from Point Mountain. Meanwhile... snowmelt from
Cheat Mountain will likely bring Shavers Fork to flood in Randolph
County. The most significant snowpack was on the ridges along
eastern Nicholas and Webster counties... and western Pocahontas and
Greenbrier counties.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... highways and underpasses. Additionally... country
roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks... streams and other low
lying areas are subject to flooding.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to
higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to
flooding when water begins rising.
In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to travel across
flooded roads. Find alternate routes. It takes only a few inches of
swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.
To report flooding... have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the National Weather Service forecast office.
